Murder after the 2023 amendment to Act 29

NotifiedLaw Editorial · 19 Oct 2026 · 5 min read

Section 46 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29) originally provided that a person who commits murder is liable to suffer death.

The Criminal Offences (Amendment) Act, 2023 substituted this with imprisonment for life. The definition of murder in section 47 is unchanged.

When citing, give the section of Act 29 and note the amending Act, so a reader knows which version you rely on. Our statute page shows the original and current text side by side.
